Special Planning Considerations

Whether your project is a house, an addition or simply decorative timberwork, the planning process will take a couple of special steps.  Your timber frame project is different from a conventional construction project in a few simple ways.  Most important among these differences are the Build Team and the Project Schedule.

The Build Team
You'll select a timber framer as you would any other specialty subcontractor.  Be sure to assess their approach in working with your designer and your general contractor.

The Architect or designer, timber framer and General Contractor constitute the all-important build team and you'll want to be sure they will work well together.  It is not essential that your Architect/designer or General Contractor be experienced in timber frame.  It is more important that they are excellent in their own disciplines and that you can communicate effectively and comfortably with them.  Wild Horse will bring the timber frame expertise to the project.  We are experienced in working with build team partners that have had little or no timber frame experience.  We consider it part of our obligation to ensure the success of the build team by making sure the other players know just what they need to know about timber frame.  We will carefully orchestrate the timber frame aspects of the project with the key members of your build team.

The Schedule
A timber frame project usually involves some special materials.  These materials cannot be found at a typical building supply outlet.  In most cases these timbers are milled specifically for your project.  After milling, the production work required to craft your timber frame is be done in a shop environment and this must be done well in advance of site assembly.   Depending on the scope of your project, the up-front planning required to ensure materials are on hand early enough may be a matter of months.  We'll work with you to determine the special planning requirements of your project and to ensure that the timber frame fits into the overall construction schedule planned by your general contractor.
