Composting
Gardeners call it black gold. We generally call it garbage. But composting organic waste is a great idea.
Since approximately 40-50% of residential wast is organic matter, 
landfill capacity requirement could be significantly reduced if we had centralized composting. Composting produces a usable product, which replaces the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Rich in organic matter, finished compost can help improve soil texture and fertility. Organic waste such as food waste and yard waste in landfills is the #1 producer of methane gas in the United States. When not controlled and simply vented into the atmosphere, methane gas is the most destructive of all the greenhouse gases, contributing 25 times as much to climate change as carbon dioxide.
Composting protects our environment
- Your garden and kitchen organics are a valuable resource that is wasted by land filling, being burned or or washed down the sewer.
- Organic matter in the landfill is a main source of methane gas. The less garden and kitchen wast we send to the landfill the less methane gas is produces. (Gas measurements show that home composting does not produce methane gas)
- Less kitchen waste put down in-sink disposal units means less pressure on the sewer and waste water treatment system.
- Adding compost to the soil improves the fertility and water holding ability of the soil, it encourages soil life (like worms) and promotes plant growth.
- Compost reduces the amount of fresh water used for irrigation because the soil holds moisture better.
