Permeable Paving Surfaces
Storm water runoff is not clean water. It starts out that way, but as the rain and melting snow flows off roofs,
streets, lawns and farmland, the flowing water carries pollutants such as fertilizers, oil, litter and pesticides into the nearby waterways. The further the water flows before it is absorbed into the ground the more pollutants it collects.
The overriding condition that governs the quantity of storm water runoff is the amount of impervious surfaces located on your property. (Driveways, roofs, carports, sidewalks etc.) Storm water quality is governed by the accumulation of pollutants such as fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals used around your property.
Your can minimize both the Storm water Quantity and Quality runoff by:
- Limiting the amount of impervious surfaces in your landscape. Use permeable paving surfaces such as wood decks, pavers, bricks and vegetative areas.
- Allow the growth of thick vegetation alongside waterways to filter and slow runoff and soak up pollutants
- Plant trees, shrubs and ground cover. They absorb up to fourteen times more rainwater than grass and don't require fertilizer.
- Avoid use of pesticides and fertilizers. Dispose of residential chemical waste at a proper disposal site.
- Create Swales rather than burms to soak up rainwater
