Reclaimed Wood
Reclaimed wood is on its second life. It has already provided shelter for many decades, and although the building may no longer be inhabitable, the wood is often better and more beautiful than new harvested wood today. Many companies are deconstructing buildings by hand to preserve the timbers for future use.
Reclaimed wood is generally of a very high quality. Because the wood probably came from a first growth forest,
it is likely to be clearer, straighter and denser than any wood available today. Reclaimed wood is less likely to bend and twist in your home since it has been drying slowly for many years.
When you choose reclaimed wood for your home you get a piece of history to go along with it. You may have wood from an old warehouse in your own neighborhood, or a gold mine thousands of miles away. Your beams are not just building materials, they have a past and, like family heirlooms, their story is as important as their physical beauty.
Using reclaimed wood encourages people to continue to deconstruct rather than demolish buildings with old growth timbers. This benefits the environment in two ways: minimizing wood wasted and sent to the landfill, and protecting old growth forests where large timbers are typically found.
